Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, and its capital’s carnival: Santa Cruz de Tenerife stages what is regarded as the world’s second-biggest carnival, twinned with Rio de Janeiro. A Celia Cruz concert in 1987 drew more than 250,000 people, and around 400,000 gathered for the Day Carnival in 2019, with the Carnival Queen at its heart.
